Kochi is a mixture of Jewish historical music with traditional instruments from India. Kochi (or Cochin as it is known in the U.S.) was once a thriving Jewish community in the small fishing port of Kerala, India. The Jews of Kochi were accepted, and even welcomed, by the rulers of India. The Hindu king gave the Jews permission to live there, “as long as the world and the moon exist,” and to build synagogues for worship. Today the population of Jews in Kochi is small, however, we celebrate their rich history in India with our second album. A portion of the proceeds from this album will be donated to the Gabriel Project Mumbai (GPM), a Jewish volunteer-based initiative caring for vulnerable children living in the Mumbai slums by providing hunger relief, literacy support, health care and empowerment. gabrielprojectmumbai.org

When thirty men allow a woman to lead them on their quest to save the rich musical heritage of Jewish music for generations to come, you know it must be one daunting task! The San Diego Jewish Men's Choir has taken on this challenge for over ten years, and has recorded this debut CD as a way to help spread this music to a larger audience. The album includes historically relevant Jewish music in Hebrew, Yiddish, Ladino, and English. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this album go toward distributing FREE CDs to Jewish libraries, senior homes, and schools.

“The San Diego Jewish Men's Choir got the ball rolling! Under the deft guiding hand of their director, Ruth Weber, we were treated to some Yiddish standards…Cantor Larry Kornit of B'nei Tikvah in Carlsbad, added some old country liturgy with soul-stirring vocals.” Eric George Tauber, San Diego Jewish World Online Magazine

“I have wanted to review this album for a while. Quite frankly, it’s delightful on many levels, especially if you are like me and enjoy non auto-tuned voices. The reason why I feel the way I do about this album is that it delivers what you don’t expect and in a voluminous way. The chorus of mens' voices are rich and full in the ranges that are required for such a task as this. The subject matter of musical selections that goes from religious to show tunes is quite impressive and very entertaining. The diverse menu continues with Yiddish folk tunes with lots of yelling "Oey!" It’s very happy! We also have the Klezmer tinged “Abi Gezunt” with the band. It’s very upbeat. Not to be missed is the religious cultural “Psalm 150.” This religious piece steeps you into their cultural Judeo heritage. A large grin most certainly will come with their rendition of the big band pop standard from the 1940′s “Bei Mir Bist Du Shein.” Ruth really corralled this choral group into something quite unique. I recommend it to you all EAR-Responsibly to give it a spin.”
